AGC Utah announces “Projects of the Year”
R&O Construction’s Village at South Campus in Provo, Utah, and the Megaplex Theatre in West Valley, Utah were project winners at Associated General Contractors of Utah annual convention last week.
The Village at South Campus in Provo, Utah won the “Multi-Family/Hospitality of the Year” award. The Village houses more than 900 Brigham Young University students in five floors. There are 236 units for a total of 371,686 square ft. and 190,000 square ft. of podium. The project includes two residential towers and a two-story commons area with a swimming pool, fitness area, grocery store and study area. There is a restaurant on the site, and room service is an option. Each apartment houses four people in private bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry area. The complex consists of 690 parking stalls, or enough for about three-fourths of its tenants at any one time. About 590 of those are underground in the one-level parking garage. The project owner is Peak Capital Partners and the architect is Ken Harris Architects.
The “Retail Project of the Year” award went to the Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatre at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah built by R&O. The Theatre holds 15 separate theatres in 125,000 square ft. of space including a 6,500 square foot Imax. Located on the site of the former Mervyn’s Store, almost 30,000 square ft. of the theatre footprint was constructed to run right up to the mall’s center concourse. Due to the use of a foam block or ICF materials, plus the location of the project within walking distance of mass transit and other green building criteria, the owners have elected to pursue LEED@ Silver certification, which would make this the first theatre in Utah to receive the designation. FFKR is the project architect.
The awards are judged by a select panel of judges on the following criteria: 1) Overcoming challenges and teamwork; 2) Safety; 3) Innovation and contribution to the industry and community; 4) Construction quality and craftsmanship, and 5) Function and aesthetic quality of the design.
